The poem describes how Beowulf fought against water monster Grendel together with Grendel’s mother. This essay demonstrates the linguistic, thematic, and cultural importance of Beowulf from the eyes of Grendel’s mother, an antagonist in the novel. John Gardner’s novel Grendel expounds the cultural importance of Beowulf through a character named Grendel’s mother who was a monster that lived in a cave located under water together with her son Grendel. Though she was a monster, she played important role in expounding the traditional culture in this novel. Gardner reveals major practices practiced in this culture. First, the role played by women in this culture was rather minimal, as the book presents them as confined to performing the tasks of playing stewards and or action-seeking warriors or men (Gardner 17). On the other hand, the author depicts women as peacemakers describing them as bestowing honors and gifts, which were important aspects in this culture. Men in this culture played roles of warriors and breadwinners to their families. The poem also reveals how the culture believed in supernatural being and in God. For instance, Grendel’s mother says that, â€Å"The humans believe that their God can prevent occurrence of accidents and help them win battles† (Gardner 43). Fewer and fewer people are even considering a switch from omnivore to herbivore. And the few who do may vary in their idea of exactly what vegetarianism is. Some believe that you simply refrain from eating meat, but that brings up the question of dairy products and eggs. Are they okay to eat? Yet still some believe that a true vegetarian is really a vegan, or a person that has restricted their diet to organic fruits and vegetables only. Which ever they choose, an important question is still left unanswered. Geoengineering Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Geoengineering - Essay Example Geoengineering technologies that aim to address this issue can be classified into three broad areas (ETC Group, 19-21): 1. Solar radiation management (SRM) technologies: These technologies aim to reduce the effects of greenhouse gases by increasing the radiation of sunlight back into space. Researchers and advocates have suggested various techniques like covering deserts with reflective sheets to deflect sunlight or blocking the sunlight with ‘space shades’. This technology is predicted to divert about 10% of sunlight away from the planet. Researchers have also suggested covering glaciers in the Arctic region with insulating material to reflect sunlight and prevent the melting of ice. Other techniques include painting roofs and road surfaces white so as to reflect the sunlight, using superfine reflective mesh of aluminum between the Earth and sun as ‘space mirrors’ and engineer large-scale changes in water movements in order to provoke cloud formation to ref lect sunlight. These SRM technologies can however cause significant environmental damage, including releasing additional greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. ... 2. Carbon dioxide removal and sequestration: This technology aims to remove CO2 from the atmosphere after it has been released. It involves techniques like adding iron or nitrogen to ocean water to stimulate the growth of phytoplankton in an attempt to promote carbon sequestration in deep sea and developing carbon sucking machines to extract CO2 from the air in solid form so that it can be buried. Other techniques involve controlling the levels of atmospheric CO2 by spreading magnesium iron silicate on farmland or forestland and genetically engineering communities of synthetic microbes and algae to create new forms of carbon ‘sinks’. Implementation of these technologies that intervene in complex ecosystems can however cause unpredictable side effects. Again, the duration and safety of sequestration in land or sea are mostly unknown. Many of these techniques also require land/ocean use changes that can negatively affect the poor and marginalized people. 3. Weather modific ation: This technology does not address the causes or the mechanism of climate change, but aims only to alter its outcomes. This approach involves techniques like cloud seeding by using chemicals like silver iodide to precipitate rain or snow. This technique is already practiced on a large scale in the U.S. and China despite the skepticism about its effectiveness. Another technique attempts to prevent the formation of storms by redirecting or suppressing hurricanes. Since predicting the weather and proving the effectiveness of these interventions are difficult, these technologies may result in some unwelcome and unpredictable side effects. Attempts to produce rainfall in one location can be regarded as rainfall ‘theft’ by residents of another location, especially

Contemporary Issues In Accounting And Finance Essay

Contemporary Issues In Accounting And Finance - Essay Example 3, citing a 1966 definition). At the same time, accounting is grounded on philosophical assumptions about knowledge and on the â€Å"relationship between theory and practice†. Meanwhile, for Oatley (2001), financial regulation is about regulating banks to protect depositors and shareholders. For Carvajal et al. (2009), financial regulation is something more encompassing because its key objective is to â€Å"ensure that all financial activities that may pose systemic risks are appropriately overseen.† The same perspective is also in Truman (2009). For Carvajal et al. (2009), the scope or perimeter of financial liberation involves three aspects. First, it must provide regulators with the widest view of the status of regulation action. Second, it must enable regulators to monitor and respond to risks. Finally or third, it must provide regulators with early warnings of risks. The subject area of financial regulation is important because we have a highly â€Å"financialized economy† worldwide (Andersson et al. 2010). Accounting is important for managers (Webster 2004). At the same time, accounting financial statements can provide regulators with important tools through which they can monitor the financial system, check on the progress of regulation, and anticipate possible risks so they can be addressed or eliminated (Taylor 2009). Accounting financial statements can also be used to monitor the performance of nongovernmental organisations (Morgan 2010). Financial regulation, however, is not entirely dependent on financial statements because financial regulation can cover all of the economy while financial statements from accounting cover only the economic conditions of firms or group of firms under a conglomerate (Borio and Tsatsaronis 2005; HM Treasury 2010). For example, financial regulators would also be monitoring liquidity, interest rates, capital flows, and other macroeconomic variables, not merely financial statements. Another type of reg ulation also uses financial statements but is different from financial regulation: strengthening corporate governance. Academic research contributed to the sciences or fields of accounting, financial regulation, and corporate governance. In the process, academic research protected and advanced modern living and, thus, it can be said that academic research improved our lives. Although not all journal articles are academic research, I review a few accounting journals to illustrate how academic research has been developing the field of accounting and, relatedly, financial regulation. In doing so, I will attempt to illustrate how academic research contributes to protecting and advancing life (Humphrey and Lee 2004; Sterling 1975). Barth and Landsman (2010) examined how financial reporting contributed to the financial crisis. They concluded that fair value accounting played little or no role in the financial crisis. Unfortunately, however, the lack of transparency in securitization and d erivatives misled investors from assessing properly property values and the risk of bank assets and liabilities (Barth and Landsman 2010). Because of this, they proposed to require banks to â€Å"recognize whatever assets and liabilities they have after the securitization† to reflect better the â€Å"underlying economics† of banks. Further, they recommended â€Å"disclosure of more disaggregated information, disclosure of the sensitivity of derivative fair values to changes in market risk variables,

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt Essay -- Midn

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt Savannah is the city of Southeast Georgia near the mouth of the Savannah River. James Ogelthorpe founded it in 1733, it is the oldest city in Georgia and has been a major port since the early 19th century (Soukhanov, p.1606). Savannah has been called that gently mannered city by the sea and indeed it is, with Spanish moss hanging from the huge oak trees and the shine of the moon reflecting off the pillars of Savannah’s grand mansions. Ones imagination can conjure up a simple setting where the clop of hooves on the cobblestone streets echo in the mind and sweat from the glass of a delicious madiera leaves a ring on the tabletop. I think that Jim Williams said it best. â€Å"You mustn’t be taken in by the moonlight and magnolias. There’s more to Savannah than that. Things can get very murky† (Berendt, p.11). The book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil was written by John Berendt, it is his non-fiction account of the time he spent in Savannah. Berendt was sent from his home in New York to write a magazine article about Mr. Jim Williams grand Christmas parties in Savannah. Unbeknownst to Berendt, he had just stumbled into the middle of a much better story: the Hansford slaying and the subsequent legal battles of Williams. Berendt also met a host of eccentric, even preposterous Savannahians. Here, he realized, was the sort of local color that most novelists could only dream about (www.Savannahnow.co...

Effects of Television on Society

THE EFFECTS OF TELEVISION ON SOCIETY December 12th, 2007 At the end of the XVIIIth century, scientists have discovered a way to transmit an image from a point to another. It was the beginning of television. Since then, every household has a television. Over the years, it has revolutionized people’s life. Now, as it has become a spread consumer good, everybody has one television at home, even sometimes, two or more. It has changed people’s life because the television is seen as a mean of entertainment. The striking point is that television has become a usual good whereas in the past it was almost considered as an expensive good that not all the families could afford. By watching television, people are easily able to escape from the routine of their everyday life, and to relax. In other words, television is a mean of discovering, exploring, learning, dreaming, and thinking. However, even if it has changed people’s life and has a good effect on them, it has many bad effects on them too. In fact, it is also a mean to destroy people’s life. It destroys people life because, in most of the cases, it influences a lot of people. Orson Welles, a famous American screenwriter, film and theatre director, a film producer and an actor in films, and theatres, once said: â€Å"I hate television. I hate it as much as peanuts. But I can’t stop eating peanuts†. This quotation is a way to show to people that television can be compared as a drug that people cannot get rid off. Like drugs, it makes people doing things that, in most cases, they would not have done. Actually, it has a strong power of influencing people in a bad way. It influences the ones who are psychological weak, and people who cannot make the difference between the fiction and the real life. As a result, some people think that violence on television influences people because they are not able, to see what is true and what is false. However, even if it has some bad sides, television is seen as educational and a mean to develop people’s knowledge. Even if books and newspapers are the two most important ways of learning, television had conquest people’s heart and now is trusted by lots of them. Television has many bad sides and bad effects that can be very dangerous for people and the ones who live around them. It destroys people’s life in a way, and sometimes pushes them to do things they would not have thought they would have done such as commit crimes. Over the years, television has become a drug for a large amount of people. In fact, they cannot live without it and have to watch it everyday. People became addicted to their everyday shows, and cannot live without watching them. Actually, some people cannot imagine their everyday life without a television. Television has become their most popular hobby. It is, in fact, the most popular one even before sport or going out with some friends. Socialization does not seem anymore to be a priority in people’s life. It seems that nowadays, people prefer watching TV rather than doing other things. According to the website www. turnoffyourtv. com, people spend about two hours per day in front of their television set. In this survey, men are pointed out because they spend more time watching television than women. So, they are more addictive than women because they watch television between two and three hours per day. It is all the more outstanding as television has become most popular than other hobbies such as sport that could be more interesting. To show that people are really addicted to television, the Media Awareness Network website says that â€Å"A scientific American article entitled â€Å"Television Addiction† examined why children and adults may find it hard to turn their TVs off. According to researchers, viewers feel an instant sense of relaxation when they start to watch TV—but that feeling disappears just as quickly when the box is turned off. While people generally feel more energized after playing sports or engaging in hobbies, after watching TV they usually feel depleted of energy. According to the article â€Å"this is the irony of TV: people watch a great deal longer than they plan to, even though prolonged viewing is less rewarding. † Because of this addiction, people can withdraw into themselves and live apart from the society they are living in. According to another website, children spend twenty five hours per week in front of their television set instead of spending their free time playing with their friends or practicing sports. This behavior should alert their parents because going outside and meeting people are parts of their education. As a result, children should not stay all day long in their house watching television and playing video games. It is not good for their education as well as for their socialization. Moreover, the television has other bad consequences and the first target is children. In addition to what was said previously, television influences the youngest. In fact, children are an easy target for television producer. They are much more easily influenced than adults for example. As a result, they can be influenced by violent movies such as thrillers, and can have a weird and violent behavior after having watching such a movie. Watching a violent show can give children the taste of violence and other related behaviors. As they are innocent, they cannot make the difference between what fiction is and what reality is. They want to do what their superheroes do, no matter what. As a result, watching a violent movie can affect in a bad way the weaker. It can make them thinking about murders and sometimes make them committing crimes. Even a person who comes from a well educated and wealthy family can be touched by it. It does not only affect people with financial and other problems. As a result to this violence on television, on April 19th, 2001, in Columbine High School, Colorado, two teenagers named Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed twelve students and one teacher and then killed themselves. They had guns that they had ordered online and homemade bombs they had made days before the massacre. According to the media, they did that because they were both influenced by television and both influenced by a singer named Marilyn Manson and his music videos. Moreover, as they were the victims of mockeries and were rejected by the others, they decided to killed people to show them that they were not as stupid as they thought. In a way, both killers were influenced by violent movie. They were both full of anger and were ready to kill everybody. In fact, in the cybercollege website, it is said that the more children watch television, the more aggressive they become in the future. Moreover, they would be more likely to repeat what they have seen on television. In addition to that, an article in changingchannels. com says: â€Å"Basically, what these studies indicate is that violent media images tend to make us all just a bit more aggressive and impatient. The effect is more dramatic on children, who mentally process media violence the same way they would actual violence — and can be traumatized by exposure to excessively violent scenes. † As a shocking fact to prove that, in howtotalktoyourkids. om website in 2001, 75% of boys and 60% of girls said that they hit somebody in the past year because they were angry. Another outstanding fact that could be added is the event that occurred on April 16th, 2007 in the United States of America. Seung-Hui Cho, an American Korean who was a senior at Virginia Tech University, killed thirty three people and killed himself. His motivation to commit murders was because he wanted to kill people. In other words, h e did that just to kill and to have blood on his hands. In fact, this student had psychological problems as doctors said. However, he was not the only one to be blamed. In fact, as he was also part of a generation that spends their time watching violent movies and that is very easily influenced, television should also be blamed. Plus, by watching such movies, kids can think that violence resolves any problems they have to face. As a result, they are willing to practice bullying, to employ swear words and to hit people if they do not have what they want or if they are disappointed of something. They think this is the only way and do not think that talking could be a good solution. Moreover, the ones who watch violent movies could become afraid of the reality. They could, in fact, think that what happens in movies could become true. It can destabilize them. As a result, they can have psychological problems. The university killer had psychological problems, so people can say that he may have watched violent show on television when he was young, and since then he had been traumatized. Then, people should be aware that sometimes wrong information is given on television. As a result, people should remain conscious that information can be amplified to scare people. Most of the time, the weaker cannot see what is wrong and what is true. People should listen to what is said on television; but to confirm what they have learned they should read the newspapers, for example, to expand their knowledge and to have many different points of view to construct their culture. The more information people have about a subject, the more able they are to see what could be true and what could be false. So, while everybody is sitting in front of the screen, many people work â€Å"behind† the television set. Who are these people see? Who controls what will be shown and what won’t? People do not know anything about what happens backstage, and all these people who are working hard â€Å"behind† have a big influence on television viewers. Most of the viewers do not know it, but they work in order to control their mind. Even if they think they can have their own opinion on what they are seeing, television has an important influence on people’s thoughts. If people do not know a part of an information, or if they only have one point of view about the news, they can not be really objectives. In fact, television is absolutely not objective! There are too many possibilities to influence people thanks to television (for politics, or economics managers) than it is a very practical way to introduce some ideas in households and in people’s minds. Television also influences people in their way of consuming goods. It has, in fact, increased the amount of goods purchased per family. Kids sometimes see some toys on television advertisement and want it because it is brand new. They are always influenced by new products coming out and their parents have to buy the toys they want. Because of television and its commercials, people are willing to buy the same things. So, television is used by brands to promote themselves. That’s why there is a lot of advertising on television, during movies, between programs. Companies use the fact that many people watch television to set their spots when many people will see it. As a result to that, most of households have felt into a society of mass consumption that increases each year. Finally, television has bad effects of people’s healthy development. Researches were made to prove to people that watching television increases people’s obesity. In fact, people like eating junk food and drinking sodas while watching television. Excess of nibbling between main dishes is not good for people’s body and increases a lot their weight. A lot of American families cannot spend their television time without eating food. They need at least something to put in their mouth to feed them. However, it does not only touch the American culture. As the Media Awareness Network website shows, almost one in four Canadian children, between  seven and twelve years old, is obese (researches made by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada). Moreover, watching too much television during the same period of time is not good for people’s eyes. In fact if people stay focus in the same position and in the dark while watching their favorite show, it will damage their eyes vision. In addition to that, smokers smoke a lot of cigarettes while there are in front of their television set. So, it increases a lot the possibility for them to have a cancer. It also touch people’s health because instead of doing sport people do another one which is â€Å"coach potato†. This sport is not a good one for people’s health. As a result, people do not lose ny weight because most of them spend a lot of their free time in front of their television set. However, some people think television is good for everybody because positive points can be seen. In fact, even it influences a lot the weaker; it gives a lot of useful information and is a mean of learning. First, television is a new way of learning. When television firs t arrived, it was a revolution for people because they could get the chance to have news from it by watching the daily news magazine. It gives people information about what happen all around the world. It is a mean to have more information so that people can easily make up their mind. In fact, by reading the newspaper, listening to the radio, and then watching documentary shows or news on television, people can increase a lot their knowledge. Television is also seen as a mean to learn. For example, in schools teachers use a lot television to show to their students some documentaries that could be related to their courses. This is seen as an incentive for students. Thanks to it, they can make direct relationships between what their teachers have taught them and what they have seen on television. As teenagers were born with a television, not as most of the teachers were, the teachers think that using television could interest them more. Laurie Rozakis, a writer, focuses a lot of the good effects television has on people. In fact, in Writing Essentials for the Pre-GED Student, she stresses the fact that television helped her in three different ways. First, it helped her to learn English better, and then, it helped her to learn more about the country she was living in: the United Sates of America. The third way was that television helped her to stay out of trouble. She did not go outside at night because she was watching the shows she liked the most. Then, television is a way to escape from reality. Sometimes, it helps people dreaming about a new world for example. Some movies can help them traveling. For example, the ones who cannot travel would enjoy watching a travel documentary of the country they are dreaming about. Television also gives the â€Å"family model† through shows on television. It is the model everybody dreams about. In addition to that, people who have financial problems or who are in hospital can escape their problems by watching television. Thanks to that, they forget for some hours what they have to endure every day. Television is also a family time. It gathers people around the same thing. The Media Awareness Network website focuses a lot on the fact that television is good for family values. First, it allows people to spend time together. Nowadays, people do not have a lot of time to spend with their family. As they spend many hours at works and in transportations, they do not get the chance to have time with their family, except during week ends. As a result, television watched at fix hours allowed them to gather and to discuss together about important subjects. The more information people have from others, the better it is for them and their general culture. As a result to these discussions, children would learn more from it and would become more open-minded. Moreover, they can have the chance to discuss these subjects in class, and give their own opinion to their class. To conclude, the effects the television has on people are an opened debate since many years and would still be in the future. Even if it has bad repercussions, such as fear of the others, violence, mass consumption, it has also good effects. In a way, television increases people’s knowledge. It gives them more information about an event, and it gathers people round the same sofas to share ideas, opinions and feelings. As the Media Awareness Network website says â€Å"Parents should also pay close attention to what their children see in the news since studies have shown that kids are more afraid of violence in news coverage than in any other media content. Fear based on real news events increases as children get older and are better able to distinguish fantasy from reality. † It has been shown that television is something very important in households, and that many people care a lot about their television and about what is shown. However, people who control television channels know that and they try to influence people. They know that what they will show will be heard by thousands of people and that it will have an important influence on the society, and sometimes on the consumption. So, people should seriously take into consideration that television has both good and bad effects on them. These people should warn the youngest about what is good and what is bad, and what to do with the massive information the television gives them. BIBLIOGRAPHY Rozakis, Laurie. Free Essays on Gamma Hydroxy Butyrate

Gamma Hydroxy Butyrate (GHB) GHB, or Gamma-Hydroxy Butyric Acid is an intoxicating chemical with medical, recreational, and potentially entheogenic uses. It is a normal component of mammalian metabolism. It is naturally found in every cell in the human body and is most properly considered a nutrient. Although it’s still unknown it is considered to be a possible neurotransmitter. GHB was first synthesized about thirty years ago by Dr. H. Laborit, a French researcher interested in exploring the effects of GABA (gamma-amino butyric acid) in the brain. Over the years many researchers have studied GHB’s effects. In Europe it is used as a general anesthetic for insomnia and narcolepsy. During the 1980's it was available over the counter for its ability to stimulate growth hormone release which aids in fat reduction and muscle building. Now it is very popular as a rec. drug due to it’s quick high, and strong sexual affects it has. Some less technical names or street names for this drug are Liquid X, Georgia Home Boy, and Scoop. GHB is not approved in the US and has been banned from being sold over the counter since 1990. Though possession of this drug is not illegal, GHB continues to be sold to lab’s and scientists for research. Selling it for human consumption, while making claims about its health benefits, is a violation of the FDA regula tion policies! . There are many side affects associated with this drug. GHB has somewhat the same side affects as alcohol. It affects the release of dopamine in the brain, causes relaxation or fatigue. The difference is that the buzz or the trip is longer than your drunken high and the hangover effects are slightly less and the unpleasant. Contemporary writing Essay Example

Contemporary writing Essay Example Contemporary writing Essay Contemporary writing Essay Essay Topic: Like Water for Chocolate The Handmaids Tale Giving voices to suppressed groups or individuals is recognized as a preoccupation of contemporary writing. Discuss contemporary works which you have studied with this preoccupation in view; say how successful the attempt is and how you respond to it in each case. Two transcendental novels set in different countries first written in two dissimilar languages, yet both depicted the oppression of individuals as a preoccupation of contemporary writing. In Margaret Atwoods superlative novel The Handmaids Tale the protagonist is confined in the puritanical system of the rigid Republic of Gilead. In contrast, Tita from the periodical novel Like Water for Chocolate is restrained by her tyrannical mothers pronouncement to conform to tradition. One of the social concerns dealt with in Laura Esquivels novel was the restriction of marriage of women if born the youngest daughter of the family. In Like Water for Chocolate, the protagonist, in falling in love with Pedro and born as the youngest child of the De La Garza family, was destined to live a miserable life. Her flood of tears that had cascaded down when she was born symbolized a sorrowful life. The birth room-the kitchen, foreshadowed the strong ties that Titas life were to have with the kitchen and food, it [kitchen] is a source of knowledge and understanding that generates life and pleasure. -Laura Esquivel1 Tita struggled to appease Mama Elenas propriety that was revealed through the symptoms and illnesses caused by Titas food in her attempt (if not purposefully) to ruin her sister Rosauras wedding. Everyone there, every last person, fell under this spell that seized the guests [of Rosauras wedding] and scattered them across the patio and the grounds and into the bathrooms collectively vomiting wailing over lost love. 2 It is natural to think that a birth mother would have her childs best interest in mind. On the contrary, however, Mama Elena treated tradition as a far more important issue than her daughters welfare. There was no love present in Tita and Mama Elenas relationship. In one of Titas outbursts, she screamed at Mama Elena, I know who I am! I am a person who has a perfect right to live her life as she pleases. Once and for all, leave me alone; I wont put up with you! I hate you! I hate you, Ive always hated you! 3 and with these words Tita disintegrated Mama Elenas ghost. These also successfully expressed Titas anger and hatred toward this authoritarian character that she has despised for her entire life. It is evident that Esquivel intended to emphasis Titas resentment through the deployment of the repeated I hate you and the punctuation: ! . Likewise in The Handmaids Tale, the hypocritical Gileadian government officials inhibited individuality and enforced conformity upon the handmaids. Gilead provided its women with freedom from the unpleasant nature of Western society but at the same time it has taken away all their rights. This society was based on the fundamentals of the Bible where religious and sexual violations were punished heavily. Women in the novel were classified according to their specific functions Wives, Handmaids, Marthas, Econowives, Aunts. Women became mere breeding objects identical, replaceable, silent objects5 to help Gileads quest in achieving higher birth rates. Offreds flashbacks played an important role in expressing the theme of loss, in which all her recollections were buries, including her freedom to love. In the beginning of the novel, Offred was portrayed as a blank figure with no identity. Throughout the plot, she continued to reconstruct her past. She found herself a new place, her own space. There was to be some space, finally that I [Offred] claim as mine, even in this time 6 Offred eventually escaped her past because of Nick, and felt that life in Gilead may be tolerable. Being here with him [Nick] is safety and how have I come to trust him [Nick] like this I tell him [Nick] things I shouldnt. Atwood skillfully manipulated the structure and time sequence that demonstrated the sharp contrast between the once creative and lively world yet not perfect to the now alienated and suffering framework of Gilead. The novel revealed dystopia through a series of glimpses, similar to that of a detective story until the climax was disclosed, unveiling the extreme extent of the Republics cruelty and corruption. The readers experienced the events in Gilead as vividly as Offred did. The narrator, Offred possessed a satire humour that made the horrible affairs in Gilead bearable. Through her revelations of the confinements of her fellow women, Offred revealed yet another flaw in Gilead; patriarchy, a form of sexism. Gilead controlled women, controlled sexuality not about romance, passion or desire; only a matter of duty. 8 But the pinnacle power that Gilead had over its people was the control of thought. The Republic of Gilead knows no bounds. Gilead in within you. 9 The ideologies of all flesh in weak10, men are sex machines11 were drilled into all those who went through the women-subjugating Red center. Offred resisted Gilead inwardly; once an attempt to escape from the regime failed she resigned to fate. Though the two novels were very different in terms of time and setting, both Like Water for Chocolate and The Handmaids Tale demonstrated giving voice to oppressed individuals or groups through the apt vehicle of structure and time sequence. Esquivel verified that tradition still played an important role in the general Mexican society and the impact it has on those affected- Tita. The Canadian author, Atwood, used this novel as predictions of the future if its warning were ignored.

Internal Monitoring for a Stronger Police Force Research Paper

Internal Monitoring for a Stronger Police Force - Research Paper Example A metaphor is something that is used to signify an idea through example, and therefore this is an objective example of applying something that may be completely unrelated objectively, but still has meaning as it is seen to relate to a larger concept. In the case of the broken windows theory, this larger concept is the assumption that, basically, one thing leads to another. This is related in some ways to the previous objective portrayal of the domino metaphor, in which it only takes one domino falling to make many other dominos fall. Objectively, in terms of the broken window theory, â€Å"The germ of the idea is simple and compelling. A broken window--or a littered sidewalk, a graffito, or what you like--does no great harm to a neighborhood if promptly addressed. But left untended, it sends a signal: that no one cares about this neighborhood, that it is a safe place to break things, to litter, to vandalize. Those who engage in such behaviors will feel safe here. And once these mino r miscreants have become well established, perhaps it will seem a safe enough neighborhood in which to be openly drunk† (Siegel et al., 2006). The first part of this statement is very objective by nature. Zero tolerance programs are also features of traditional policing. Traditional policing involves theory and other issues. It is also anticipated that results will be mixed in terms of officers’ perceptions of ethics training as an effective option to cut down on misconduct. â€Å"Usually, the content of ethics training consists of adopting one philosophical framework and discussing hypothetical or researched ethical dilemmas within that framework. To be sure, examples of ethical dilemmas for criminal justice students and practitioners can be gathered from newspapers, books, and journal articles.

Cash budjet Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Cash budjet - Essay Example The minimum line of credit is the amount of money that can be allocated and be made available whenever a client company needs it (Fabozzi & Peterson, 2003). BCM has shown that it needs $241,500 in the month of June. This should be the minimum line of credit from the spreadsheet. CBM’s cash position is quite strained especially in the first four months. CBM is forced to seek additional financing from outside. This is due to low cash receipts from debtors who have formed the main source of cash in the budget. The concern for the company is how to obtain extra external financing and what interest will be needed (Pineda, 2006). The cash budget also does not have a provision for repaying the short loan and interest. As a bank manager, I will not accept CBM as my client for some reasons. The first one is that CBM is a new venture which has not sold even one item and therefore the market is new. CBM needs a total of $415,250 just within the first four months. According to Bierck (2009) such an undertaking is risky since CBM does not have any historical figures which can give a clue of how much sales they can be able to generate The other point is that there is no reference for the sales forecast. I will only accept CBM once they have traded and have historical figures to rely in respect of the
